Mick Statham begins his fourth year at the helm of the Lafayette women's soccer program. In his inaugural season, he led the Leopards to the program's wins since 2002, with his squad finishing sixth in the final Patriot League standings. Statham returns a team loaded with talented underclassmen, as well as a few key upperclassmen for the 2009 campaign.
Before taking the reigns at Lafayette, Statham spent the 2005 season as the top assistant coach at Florida State, where he helped guide the women's soccer program to a berth in the College Cup (Final Four), one win away from the national title game. Statham played a large role in the team's 20-4-1 record and postseason success. Following the season, he was named Regional Assistant Coach of the Year by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA).
Prior to coaching at Florida State, Statham spent 2004-05 as an assistant coach at Penn on the women's soccer staff following 2003-04 when he worked as an assistant men's coach at Philadelphia University. His only previous collegiate head coaching experience came in 1995-96 at Mount St. Mary College. He also served as an ODP Staff Coach in Eastern Pennsylvania, head girl's soccer coach at Radnor High School (1997-2003) and was the Director of Coaching and Player Development for FC Delco (1999-2003), one of the country's most recognizable youth clubs.
He also has coaching experience on a national stage. In 2002-03, he made the move to the professional ranks, taking over as an administrator/assistant coach with the Philadelphia Charge of the WUSA where he coached some of the world's top soccer players. Then, in 2004, he served as a staff member with the US U-19 Women's National Team.
A 1992 graduate of Franklin Pierce College, Statham was a four-year scholarship player who played in the NCAA Tournament three of his four years. He earned a bachelor's degree in Communications from the Rindge, N.H. school where he remained as an assistant men's coach from 1992-93.
Before attending Franklin Pierce, Statham spent four years with one of England's most prestigious football clubs, the Blackburn Rovers, as an apprentice professional player. He went on to become a professional youth coach with Bury Football Club (1987-88) and gained his FA Coaching License.
